The Danube Delta and Black Sea Cycling Tour follows a stunning section of EuroVelo 6, the transcontinental route connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea

This self-guided cycling adventure takes you along some of the most scenic stretches of the Danube River, starting in Tutrakan, Bulgaria, and ending on the shores of Constanța, Romania.

As the Danube River forms the natural border between Bulgaria and Romania, the journey allows for a seamless transition between the two cultures, enriching the experience with diverse landscapes and local traditions.

As you cycle toward the coast, the landscape transforms into the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, a vast region of salt lakes, wetlands, and open plains, teeming with wildlife.

Before reaching the Black Sea, you will tackle the tour’s most challenging section – the breathtaking Dobrogea Gorges, where dramatic limestone canyons and rolling hills create unforgettable scenery.

This journey is designed for cyclists with a good fitness level, featuring a maximum daily ride of 60 kilometers. The route primarily follows paved roads, with approximately 150 kilometers of gravel sections.

However, the carefully planned route ensures a hassle-free experience, complete with a digital guidebook featuring recommendations and GPS tracks to keep you on course.

All your accommodations are pre-booked, and we take care of the convenient luggage transfers. If you ever need assistance, our round-the-clock support team is just a phone call away.

This cycling region offers all, from Romania’s oldest urban settlement, Histria, with its fascinating Greek and Roman ruins, to the vibrant port city of Constanța, where history meets the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Romania is generally safe for cycling travelers. Improving roads and drivers accustomed to cyclists, especially in rural areas offer a secure and enjoyable experience. Following our carefully designated cycling routes, you can confidently explore the country. Additionally, the ongoing situation in Ukraine does not impact Romania, and all the cycling regions we promote remain safe and unaffected.

Romani’s official currency is the Romanian Leu (RON). While many hotels, restaurants, and shops also accept euros (EUR), using the local currency is the most convenient option. Card payments are not widely accepted, especially in rural areas, so it is best to carry enough cash for your travels.

Stray dogs are less common than before, but they can still be found in some rural areas. Cyclists may encounter them along their routes, but these dogs are generally accustomed to people and not aggressive. If you come across a dog while cycling, slow down and make a gentle noise signal as it is usually enough for the dog to move aside without issue.

Romania is generally safe to travel to, even with its large bear population. While bear encounters can happen, they are rarely dangerous if you follow proper precautions. Millions of tourists visit Romania every year without any issues.

Google Maps works well in Romania for driving, cycling, walking, and public transport. However, some rural roads and hiking trails may not be fully mapped and some remote areas may lack signal. If traveling to mountains or rural regions, we advise you to download offline maps in advance. Besides, street names can be confusing as some roads have similar names, so we suggest you double-check the location before heading out. Nevertheless, our detailed digital guidebook and GPS tracks will keep you on course.

Public transportation in Romania is widely available in major cities, with buses, trams, trolleybuses, and a metro system in Bucharest. While reliable in urban areas, intercity travel by train can be slow, so buses and ride-sharing apps like Bolt and Uber are often better alternatives.

Please, make sure you check the schedules and connections beforehand, and be advised that some remote areas may not be as well connected.

Self-guided cycling tours provide a personalized and flexible approach to cycling holidays. You can explore at your own pace and adapt your route or schedule as you see fit. Our tours are rated on a difficulty scale from 1 to 5 to help you choose the right adventure:

1/5 – Short daily distances of approximately 30 km. Easy, flat terrain suitable for everyone, including those with no prior sports experience.

2/5 – Daily distances of up to 40 km. Some light uphill sections, up to 200 m, but not every day. Suitable for anyone in good health.

3/5 – Daily distances around 50 km. Daily altitude gains of up to 500 m. On days with less altitude, distances may be longer. Ideal for recreational cyclists in good physical condition.

4/5 – Daily distances of 60 km or more. Daily altitude gains of 400 m or more, with some stages reaching up to 1000 m. Designed for well-prepared amateur cyclists who are comfortable with uphill riding.

5/5 – Challenging stages with steep climbs and long distances. Suitable for experienced road cyclists seeking a demanding adventure along with breathtaking scenery.

Great holiday. Really easy to follow routes, good choice of hotels and the en route places to eat and visit was really helpful. Super responsive to questions during my holiday. Would definitely use them again.
